STMC Volunteers Give Back to the Community

Winchester, Tenn. – You might have visited a friend or family member at Southern Tennessee Medical Center or you may have been a patient there in recent times.  If so, you were no doubt greeted at some point by one of the wonderful members of the STMC Volunteer Auxiliary.  They assist the visitors, patients, their families, the employees and departments of the hospital with numerous tasks and always do so with a smile on their faces.

What you might not have known is that this group of volunteers also gives back to the young people in our community.  A STMC Nursing Auxiliary Endowed Scholarship, recipient chosen by Motlow State Community College, was established in 2003 with the goal of paying for one nursing scholarship each year.  Elizabeth Fulmer, Huntland High School, was chosen as this year’s recipient.  Ms. Fulmer’s parents are Bruce and Nancy Fulmer of Huntland.

The STMC Volunteer Auxiliary also provides one year scholarships in the amount of $2,000 each to Franklin County seniors planning careers in the medical field from Franklin County High School and Huntland High School.  The scholarships were presented this year to:  Katherine Housley of Decherd who is attending The University of the South; Ms. Housley’s parents are Laura Arnold and Shad Housley; Taylor Farris of Winchester who is attending Middle Tennessee State University; parent Vickie Farris; Chelsey Vandiver of Huntland who is attending Motlow State Community College; parent Mia Vandiver; Jessica Neal of Belvidere who is attending Motlow State Community College; Ms. Neal’s parents are Jerry and Jane Neal; and Paisley Reed of Belvidere who is attending Motlow State Community College; Ms. Reed’s parents are Bobby and Jill Judge Reed.

The monies for these scholarships are raised through sales in the STMC Gift Shop.  “We are always recruiting members for the STMC Volunteer Auxiliary,” states Linda Counts, STMC Volunteer Auxiliary President.  “We feel that volunteering is a mission and enjoy the fellowship it provides and the feeling of being valued members of the Southern Tennessee Medical Center family.”  If you are interested in finding out more about the scholarships or becoming a member of the STMC Volunteer Auxiliary, contact Linda Counts, STMC Volunteer Auxiliary President, at 931-967-1589 or Tina Lacey, STMC Volunteer Coordinator, at 931-967-8369.
