Southern Tennessee Medical Center Services

Southern Tennessee Medical Center is a comprehensive medical facility licensed for 131 hospital beds and 26 skilled care/nursing home beds and is fully accredited by The Joint Commission. The wide array of services available at Southern Tennessee Medical Center, combined with a qualified and diverse medical and nursing staff, is designed to meet the healthcare needs for the people and communities of Southern Middle Tennessee. Southern Tennessee Medical Center continues to grow in services, medical staff and facilities. This growth is evidence of our commitment to provide the best in dedicated employees, quality medical care, effective facilities and advanced technology. STMC offers a continuum of care covering all aspects of healthcare including 24 hour emergency care, home care, and skilled nursing facilities.

Emerald-Hodgson Hospital

Emerald-Hodgson Hospital, located on the campus of the beautiful University of the South in Sewanee, is a 21 bed general acute care facility and a 20 bed skilled care facility which provides high quality health care for a progressive and supportive community. The nursing and support staff strive to provide individualized care directed to the specific needs of each patient. Services include a 24 hour Emergency Room, laboratory and pathology services, social services, in-house pharmacy, physical and respiratory therapy, cardiopulmonary care, radiology and patient transportation services. Emerald-Hodgson Hospital is fully accredited by The Joint Commission and has been certified for participation in the Medicare and TennCare programs.

Cardiac Cath Lab 

Southern Tennessee Medical Center offers cardiac catheterization services in a fully outfitted Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. Staffed by skilled and experienced technicians, the cardiac cath lab offers local, expert cardiac services for the diagnosis of Coronary Artery Disease, Peripheral Vascular Disease, and Valvular Heart Disorders.

Cardiopulmonary

The Cardiopulmonary department offers a variety of treatments for patients with lung and breathing disorders including oxygen and aerosol therapy, IPPB therapy, and pulmonary function testing, which are provided by board Certified and Registered Respiratory Therapists. A variety of cardiac services such as holter monitors, EKG's, and stress testing are also available through Cardiopulmonary services. When you can't breathe, nothing else matters.

Case Management/Discharge Planning

A Case Manager or Social Service Worker can assist you in assessing if alternative living arrangements will be needed after the hospital, such as a nursing home, skilled care facility, psychiatric facility or assisted living home. If arrangements are needed for transfer, the Case Manager or Social Worker can review available options with you and help make arrangements. They can also assist you with questions concerning financial resources, advance directives including Living Wills or a Durable Power of Attorney for Healthcare, available community services and other psychosocial concerns.

Clinical Laboratory/Pathology

Pathologists and laboratory technologists work together to study the nature and causes of diseases as well as their effects on the patient. The lab provides both inpatient and outpatient services as well as drug screenings for corporations.

Critical Care

Southern Tennessee Medical Center's critical care staff members are trained to provide critical care services and procedures for acutely ill, cardiac, pulmonary, renal and medical-surgical patients. The critical care facilities include state of the art equipment with 10 intensive care unit beds. Special visitation hours are followed in the unit for the comfort and privacy of our patients. Two family members can visit patients for 30 minute intervals during the designated hours: 5:00 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m., 6:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

Diagnostic Imaging and Radiology Services

The key to effective medical treatment is timely and accurate diagnosis. Southern Tennessee Medical Center's Diagnostic and Radiology Services include Ultrasound, CT Scanning, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), PET/CT, Nuclear Medicine and X-ray.  Digital Mammography, Bone Densitometry and Steriotactic Breast Biopsy are also available at our Women's Center.

Emerald-Hodgson Skilled Facility

Emerald-Hodgson Skilled Facility is a 20 bed skilled care facility located at Emerald-Hodgson Hospital. Emerald-Hodgson Skilled Facility boasts the services of a hospital and the expertise of specially trained nursing care. Services provided to our patients include IV therapy, Clinitron therapy, physical therapy, respiratory therapy and nutritional support services.

Emergency Services

The Emergency Department at Southern Tennessee Medical Center is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The Emergency Department is staffed by physicians specially trained in emergency medicine and certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and experienced emergency care nurses. The Emergency Department staff is ready to respond to all emergencies and boasts Level II Certification by the Joint Commission. Patients will be triaged upon arrival to the Emergency Department by a trained emergency nurse prior to registration. Southern Tennessee Medical Center's Emergency Department is also an accredited chest pain center.

Geriatric Psychiatric Program/Senior Advantage

STMC offers an inpatient program designed to serve the emotional needs of people age 65 and older. STMC's inpatient geriatric psychiatric unit offers complete psychiatric services to patients who need to be hospitalized. The 12 bed unit is staffed with personnel specially trained in the assessment and treatment of elderly patients with emotional and mental problems. The treatment team consists of psychiatric nurses, social workers and counselors.

Inpatient Physical Rehabilitation Unit

The Inpatient Physical Rehabilitation Unit implements a team approach offering physical, occupational, speech, and recreational therapies; social workers; and 24-hour rehabilitative nursing care under the direction of a medical director. Other special services such as psychology and prosthesis training are available based upon the need of each patient. Our goal is to help patients get back to life, family, and friends as quickly as possible.

Medical-Surgical Department

The Medical-Surgical Unit at STMC provides nursing care for acutely ill medical and surgical patients of all ages. The unit also provides transitional care for patients transferring from critical care placement. The excellent staff offers a myriad of experience and training to meet the needs of all patients.

Nutritional Counseling/Dietary Services

Dietary services means more than delivering food to patients. STMC;s Cafeteria caters to our patients, their visitors and the public. The hospital's dietitian provides nutritional counseling to patients and offers nutritional classes to the public on an ongoing basis. Cafeteria hours are Sunday through Friday, 6:30 - 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at STMC and 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at EHH.

OccHealth Solutions

Southern Tennessee OccHealth Solutions is an occupational medicine program providing for illness and injury prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. We also provide full testing capabilities including ADA complaint physical exams, DOT exams, drug and alcohol testing and OSHA testing requirements. Our staff and participating physicians will assist you to create a plan to help your company reduce workers' compensation costs, healthcare costs, improve worksite safety, meet regulatory requirements and provide training in a wide spectrum of issues. We feature a streamlined communication system, efficient patient care and a case management system that works to reduce loss costs. Our Southern Tennessee OccHealth Solutions Coordinator acts as the liaison for you, your employees, treating physicians, hospital services and your claims payor.

Pharmacy

Southern Tennessee Medical Center and EHH pharmacies provide contemporary and cost effective services for all in-patients. In addition to providing patients with all their pharmaceutical needs, our pharmacists offer a variety of clinical services ranging from medication dosing services and pharmacokinetics monitoring, to the Patient Controlled Analgesia pain pump program. Computerized drug information and medication order handling systems are state of the art.

Physical Therapy/The Rehab Center

The goal of the physical therapy department is to help patients achieve their maximum potential. Physical therapists at STMC and EHH take a personal and direct approach to meeting an individual's healthcare needs and wants. The Rehab Center provides a wide range of services, including work hardening and on-site back schools for industries, and rehabilitative and educational services for inpatients and outpatients. Pool therapy is also available to our patients. Appointments with the physical therapists can be made Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. by calling 962-9947.

Quality Management

Our Quality Management Departments ensures that patients are provided with high-quality patient care. The services include performance improvement; case management as well as utilization review and pre-admission, infection control and employee health, risk management and physician credentialing.

Same Day Surgery

No surgery is minor when it's yours. If your physician recommends outpatient surgery, you want and deserve the support of a full hospital staff. Our Same Day Surgery Department provides a comfortable setting for procedures requiring less than a 24 -hour stay.

The Sleep Center

Sleep is as important as breathing or eating, and it is vital for giving your body rest and allowing it to prepare for the next day. Unfortunately, many people suffer from sleep disorders that make getting a full night's rest difficult or even impossible. Some of these disorders include sleep apnea, snoring, insomnia, and parasomnia (such as sleep walking). The purpose of the Sleep Disorders Center at STMC is to diagnose and treat these disorders so you can get back to a normal, healthy sleep routine.

Social Services and Discharge Planning

A team composed of nursing and social services provides essential services for patients and family members. They arrange for care after discharge, provide education, counseling, consultation, referral and crisis intervention, help with financial assistance and more. 967-8265.

Southern Tennessee Skilled Facility

Placing a loved one in someone else's care is often a difficult decision. Southern Tennessee Skilled Facility offers the services of a full service hospital and the expertise of specialized long-term skilled caregivers. Southern Tennessee Skilled Facility is 35 bed skilled care unit located in the south wing of Southern Tennessee Medical Center. STSF is certified for both Level I and Level II patients. Services provided to our patients include I.V. therapy, physical therapy, respiratory therapy-including ventilator-dependent patients, sterile dressings, decubitus care, and nutritional support including feeding tubes. Other services happily provided are warmth, friendship and a smiling face.

Specialty Clinics

Southern Tennessee Medical Center and Emerald-Hodgson Hospital have a commitment to ensure that the community has a healthy supply of specialists. In establishing our rotating specialty clinics, we are working to ensure that you and your family have access to the best possible healthcare resources. The specialty clinic at STMC is located in the A.R. Fite Building. Appointments can be made by calling 967-8344. The specialty clinic at EHH is located at 1310 University Avenue and can be reached by calling 931-598-9338.

Surgical Services

Whether it's lithotripsy, laser surgery, ophthalmology or a laparoscopic procedure, our new surgical facilities, dedicated surgeons, and specially trained Operating Room and Recovery Room nurses can handle your needs.

 

Women's Care/The Childbirth Center

Recognizing that women have special needs, the nursing and support staff in our Labor and Delivery, Nursery, Obstetrical and Gynecological nursing areas have been specially trained to meet the needs of mothers, babies, and women of all ages. Expecting mothers can deliver in our spacious, private Labor/Delivery/Recovery rooms, known as birthing rooms, which allow the entire birth process to be completed in a home-like setting. Each room offers comfort and a tasteful decor for mother, baby and family. The staff has years of experience and a desire to meet the needs of the female patient. Childbirth classes and Infant and Child CPR classes are taught throughout the year. Call 96C-HILD for additional information. The Women's Center located across from the medical center on Hospital Road also includes digital mammography, bone densitometry and stereotactic breast biopsies designed with convenience and comfort in mind.

Professional Education

Southern Tennessee Medical Center and Emerald-Hodgson Hospital recognize that education is vital for future and present healthcare providers. Working together with organizations like the Tennessee Board of Regents, Tennessee Board of Health, Motlow Community College and the American Heart Association, Southern Tennessee Medical Center provides a variety of educational programs and certifications. These programs include a one year Licensed Practical Nursing Course, a one month Certified Nursing Assistant Course, a 96 hour Critical Care Nursing Course, Advanced Cardiac Life Support classes and more.
